Why I’m so excited to be part of Scottish Labour

16 Dec , 2014

Our Chair of Scottish Labour Students shares her thoughts on the new and exciting changes happening in Scottish Labour at the moment.

I’m Erin (the woman on the right in the red jacket!) and I was elected the new Chair of Scottish Labour Students only a month ago, and I could not have dreamed of a better introduction to my new role. There’s been many exciting changes in Scottish Labour these past few weeks, not only do we have a new leadership team of Jim Murphy MP and Kezia Dugdale MSP, but also their fantastic plans and ideas for us to win in 2015 and 2016.

Jim spoke to party members this week about how these changes can make the Scottish Labour Party a patriotic party which puts creating a fairer Scotland at the forefront. Having worked all summer on the campaign to keep Scotland in the United Kingdom, I know how important it is post-referendum for Scottish Labour to be able to speak to those who voted Yes and No to independence, and these new changes will go a long way in helping us be able to do that.

Our new Shadow Cabinet in Holyrood is made up of talented MSPs, of which half are some of the most talented women in Scottish politics. I’m so proud that Scottish Labour takes women’s representation seriously, backing this up with real change rather than just the empty rhetoric we so often hear from other political parties. The difference for the women students I represent in being able to see women in positions of power is immeasurable.

It is these changes and a new sense of focus which is creating a fresh enthusiasm amongst our youth and student membership. I can already feel a new sense of hope in our party, a new feeling of being a part of something big. We know we have a lot of work to do, but we are up for the challenge.

Throughout the leadership campaign Jim and Kezia spoke of their appreciation for Scottish Labour Students, they know that we can be a key factor in winning in 2015 and 2016, and we will proudly campaign to make that happen. This is an exciting time to be involved in Scottish Labour, and while I am going to enjoy the Christmas break, I can’t wait to be back out chapping doors, speaking to voters, and helping to deliver a Labour government in both Westminster and Holyrood. I look forward to seeing as many as you as possible out on the doors with me!
