When I became an MP in 2015 one of my first actions was to introduce a private members bill to end the morally wrong practice of charging carers for hospital car parking. This was the result of months of hard work put in by me and my constituents as part of our Park the Charges campaign. If you are unwell in a hospital sometimes the love of a caring family member can lift your spirits in your darkest times. It is immoral to charge that family member up to £40 a week just so they can visit a relative in a time of need. When I raised my Private Members Bill it was only for carers however my bill was talked out by conservative MP’s who felt that it was appropriate to downplay and ridicule the financial hardship faced by carers some of whom exist only on £62.10 a week.
Despite opposition from the conservatives I never stopped fighting this unfair practice and now on the 8th June we can finally end the unjust policy of hospital car parking charges. We can end it not just for carers, but patients, visitors and hospital staff who are forced to pay to park at their own place of work. The Labour Party has listened to you and has pledged to end the scourge of expensive hospital parking for all people. By increasing the insurance premium tax on private healthcare we can create and fund an NHS that works for you. We can only do this when you vote for a Labour Government on June 8th. Labour: for the many not the few.
