It's been a really busy January in the European Parliament. One Strasbourg session and plenty of committee meetings, but also some important additional things too:
➡️I am honoured to have been appointed Special Representative for Muslim Committees for the Socialists and Democrats Group in the European Parliament by Group President Gianni Pittella.
➡️I welcomed my friend Arndt Kohn MEP to Lancashire. Arndt discovered a link between the Cockerill family (from Haslingden!) who moved to continental Europe and became a major producer of iron & steel, as well as steam engines.

Security challenges and Human Rights in South Asia

26 Jan , 2018

It was my distinct pleasure to welcome Pakistan Minister for Defense, Engr. Khurram Dastgir Khan and former Speaker Dr. Fehmida Mirza to dinner last night.

It was a really enjoyable evening, with a fascinating discussion about security challenges in South Asia, Kashmir, human rights, trade and Brexit.

Brussels diary – 27th November

26 Jan , 2018

Last week was another very productive week in the European Parliament! Last week, the usual committee meetings and votes, but here's what else I've done.

It was good to catch up with David Miliband to hear about his role as head of the International Rescue Committee - talked about human rights, particularly in relation to Myanmar and Kashmir.

Labour MEPs met with UK Permanent Representative to the EU Sir Tim Barrow to talk about ongoing Brexit negotiations ahead of December's European Council meeting.

I met with representatives of the Channel Islands to discuss Brexit and working together for better tax transparency.

North West Regional Labour Conference and a mission to talk about human rights in Saudi Arabia - it's been a busy week!

Here's what I've been working on for you this week:

I spoke at North West Regional Labour conference in Blackpool about Brexit and the disastrous scenario that No Deal would be.

I took part in official European Parliament missions to Saudi Arabia and Sri Lanka. In Riyadh I met with the UK Ambassador as well as the Saudi Foreign Minister and spoke about women's empowerment, human rights and the ongoing crisis in Yemen.

Brussels diary – 14th July 2017

14 Jul , 2017

This has been my first full week in Brussels as the North West's newest Member of European Parliament. It's been a very busy week, working hard to get my office up and running so that I can represent you effectively right from the start of my term in office.

But I have also spent time attending meetings and events, including a number of engagements on issues which will form a core part of my work here for you. I know that these issues - especially Brexit and human rights, are priorities for constituencies and communities in the North West.

Wajid Khan MEP meets President of Azad Jammu and Kashmir

11 Jul , 2017

Today I attended an event with the President of Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Sardar Masood Khan, about the ongoing situation in Kashmir.

I addressed the meeting and raised my concerns about the situation there and in the wider region.

I stressed the importance of dialogue, and just as peace is one of the founding principles of the EU, we must work towards peace in Kashmir and the wider region. In particular I am appalled by the human rights abuses, particularly against women and children.

I firmly believe Kashmiris have the right to determine their own future, and we should support them in this endeavour.
