Strasburg Session Jan 2018

It’s been a really busy January in the European Parliament. One Strasbourg session and plenty of committee meetings, but also some important additional things too:

➡️I am honoured to have been appointed Special Representative for Muslim Committees for the Socialists and Democrats Group in the European Parliament by Group President Gianni Pittella.

➡️I welcomed my friend Arndt Kohn MEP to Lancashire. Arndt discovered a link between the Cockerill family (from Haslingden!) who moved to continental Europe and became a major producer of iron & steel, as well as steam engines. I took the German delegation to Rossendale Council and Lancashire County Council – and we’re hoping to build stronger links for the future based on our shared industrial heritage.

➡️I met with Sue Robinson, Director of the National Franchised Dealers Association, to talk about the effect of Brexit (and particularly being outside the Customs Union) on the car retail industry.

➡️Jacqueline Hale from Save the Children met with me to discuss the situation in Myanmar – and look forward to doing an event with them in the European Parliament in February!

➡️I also met Lotte Leicht from Human Rights Watch, to talk about their work and my areas of interest – as I prepare to move onto the Foreign Affairs and Human Rights Committees next month.

➡️Last, but by no means least, it was a pleasure to welcome my friend Shadab Qumer, the Mayor of Oldham, to the European Parliament to tell him all about the work I’m doing here.

I’m in Strasbourg next week, and February is not going to be any quieter…

Best Wishes from Brussels,

WK.
