Standing up for Teachers

27 Apr , 2016

This week in Education Questions I raised the issue of teacher recruitment and retention with the Secretary of State for Education and the impact forcing all schools to become academies will have on the numbers of teachers leaving the profession.

I reminded the Government that the National Audit Office has reported that the number of teachers leaving the profession has increased by over 11% in the past three years, and for the past four consecutive years the Government have failed to hit their own recruitment targets.

I finished by asking whether the Minister would agree that the plan to force all schools to become academies will do nothing to help this situation and may, in many cases, cause teachers to become more demoralised and more likely to leave the teaching profession?
