Paul CampbellYour local candidate: Paul Campbell

Paul lives in the Rosehill area of Burnley and also has strong daily connections to Burnley Wood.

Paul worked in the Public Sector as a software developer until 2005, when he decided to leave work and be a 'stay at home dad' to his newborn son Alistair.

Paul has volunteered in the community for the last 6 years. He has helped people who are looking for work, supported people using computers and adults achieve basic skills.

Paul is a Parent Governor at Springfield Community Primary School in Burnley Wood and also provides IT support at the Glebe Street Play Building on Tuesday afternoons. He is also a Director of 'Big Light On', a community organisation that supports people who want to learn new skills and get involved in their community. Paul has been key in supporting the relocation of this organisation to Parliament Street in Burnley Wood.

Paul says "Travelling to Manchester every day would have meant that I saw very little of my family, given the journey was about 1 hour by car and 2 hours by rail without the Todmorden curve. Dads don't always get the chance to be so involved, so I was very grateful when Labour's new paternity scheme allowed me two weeks paid leave at home. I really appreciated this time and decided I wanted to spend as much time with him as I could, so I chose to leave my job and be the one that stayed at home. Once my son started nursery, I had a lot of time on my hands and I started to get much more involved in helping others."

"I was fortunate enough to be able to go to university, but there are many people of my age that left school without being able to read and write. It's an amazing feeling when you hear someone read their first sentence, knowing that for the last thirty years they just looked at the words as if they were a foreign language. That's why I support the work that Labour is doing to improve early years education and reduce class sizes. In the future there will be fewer adults leaving school without the basics."

"There are a lot of people in the area looking to try and get more involved, improve their skills and rebuild the community spirit. What they really need is a focal point; a place where they can access these services and meet with other people. There isn't really a permanent community venue anywhere in Burnley Wood or Rosehill. It must be particularly frustrating for people who want to get involved, but instead have the constant reminder of the disused Terrace Fields building. A lot of money has gone into that centre and now it just lies closed. I will be pushing the local Council to ensure that these facilities are restored to the local area."
