Prime Minister’s Questions and the Recent Changes to Primary Education

19 Jul , 2016

Today I spoke in Prime Ministers Questions and asked the Prime Minister to listen to the excellent head teachers in primary schools in my constituency, who tell me that the recent unprecedented changes to primary education including the new SATS have led to negative impacts on the learning outcomes of children, I asked the Prime Minister to urge the new Secretary of State for Education to take these concerns forward and to listen and make some useful changes.

You can see my questions and the Prime Minister’s response on Parliament TV at (please copy and paste the link): http://parliamentlive.tv/event/index/eab066a6-b66d-48a5-ab48-21aeeb7400db?in=12:23:10&out=12:24:12

Update on Leadership Election Process

15 Jul , 2016

Dear all,

Over the past few days we have had a lot of interest from people keen to join our organisation. Unfortunately, we're still rectifying the membership system, which is still preventing people from signing up. Trust us, we're just as frustrated as you! We'll update you as soon as the system is up and running.

At the same time we wanted to clarify the membership rules for affiliate supporters. We understand that there are many people who are keen to vote for the Leadership election, and we did not want to be in a situation whereby we accept payment for new members only for them to be unable to vote.

Speaking Up For Early Years Education

12 Jul , 2016

Yesterday I spoke in a Westminster Hall Debate on 'Early Years Development and School Readiness.' In my speech I pointed out the need to make a clear distinction between early years education and childcare provision, I argued that the best way to ensure all our citizens fulfil their potential is through the provision of high quality early years education, I said the following:

Thank you for the opportunity to speak in this important debate.

In these times of national turmoil as the UK looks to redefine its status in the world and concerns about our economy loom large it has never been more important for us to fulfil the potential of all our citizens.

Rosena Allin-Khan MP for Tooting gives her maiden speech

11 Jul , 2016

Labour's newest MP, Rosena Allin-Khan gave her maiden speech today with the former junior doctor paying tribute to her fellow public sector workers, her family and to Tooting, the constituency that she represents.

Beginning with a touching memory of past Labour politicians including Jo Cox, Dr Allin-Khan promised to "pledge to bring my years of experience in, and deep commitment to our NHS in order to stand up for it."

"They - we- see work as a vocation, not as a job," she said. "That is why they have been so damaged by the mishandling of the junior doctors' contract - and why nurses are so distraught when they see their bursaries axed.

Speech on the National Health Service in Burnley and Padiham

11 Jul , 2016

Last week I spoke up on behalf of my constituents in Burnley and Padiham and voiced their experiences and the challenges they have faced using NHS services. I also discussed the difficulties and crises facing the NHS as well as the false promise of £350 million extra in NHS spending made by the Brexit campaign, I said the following:

I want to begin by speaking about the NHS as experienced by my constituents. Getting an appointment to see a GP can be very difficult because recruitment of doctors in Burnley and Padiham is an enormous problem and many posts remain unfilled.
