This Tory-led Government is out of touch with families trying to make ends meet The price of food and soaring fuel and energy bills is making it harder for low income mums across the region to make ends meet. Labour is campaigning for this Tory-led Government to temporarily reverse VAT back down to 17.5% giving a family with two children a boost of £450 per year. Women are being hit twice as hard as men by tax credit and welfare changes: On average one-fifth of women’s income is made up of welfare payments and tax credits compared to one-tenth for men. Neither the Tories nor the Liberal Democrats seem to realise that if you cut support for families, you don’t increase women’s independence you reduce it because you cut the choices women are able to make especially when juggling work and family life. Labour analysis shows: 70% of tax credits are paid to women 60% of housing benefit is paid to women 94% of child benefit is paid to women 65% of those contributing to public sector pensions are women 65% of those affected by the cuts to pension credit for people with savings are women No plans for jobs and growth as women bear the brunt of redundancies: Britain’s women are bearing the brunt of redundancies with women’s unemployment now the highest for 23 years. This out of touch government still doesn’t have a plan for jobs and growth while women’s jobs are being heavily cut. More than 300,000 women’s jobs are likely to go in the public sector – with more jobs being hit in the private sector too, particularly in service sector and voluntary sector contracts. 65% of public sector jobs are done by women – including 69% of jobs in education and 78% of jobs in health and social care. And cuts are making it harder for mothers to work: With women’s unemployment is at its highest level since 1988. Why on earth is the Government making it worse and harder for women to get into work by cutting the childcare tax credit? In a year when the Government has cut support for childcare, 32,000 women have chosen to give up on work. That alone has cost us nearly £50 million in lost tax revenue. Children’s support and early years services being stripped away: More than £6 billion is being cut in direct financial support for children – three times as much as is being taken from the banks. Most of that money is paid to mothers this includes child tax credits, child benefit, child tax credit, maternity allowance and the child trust fund. Cameron’s out of touch Tories are kicking the ladders away for the next generation. Nearly 50 Sure Start Children’s Centres have either closed or been earmarked for closure within the next year, and an overwhelming majority of councils have cut their funding for the service. But even these figures don’t tell the whole story: mums are seeing valued services withdrawn from centres, opening hours cut and trusted staff sacked. Once again women and children are bearing the brunt of this Government's actions. And women’s retirement plans are being unfairly hit: 33,000 women face a delay in their state pension of exactly two years under proposal in the Pensions Bill. The loss of income is more than £10,000, and for those in receipt of Pension Credit, this figure exceeds £15,000. Stretford & Urmston MP Kate Green, Shadow Equalities Minister, said: "Even government officials have now admitted the truth; women are being hardest hit by this government. Whether it’s on pensions or jobs, child care or tax credits, women are bearing the brunt of the Tory led government's reforms and plans. “David Cameron and his cabinet ministers have a shocking blind spot on women. If they really want to help women they need a major re-think on policies across the board. And we need fundamental changes not just in policies, but in the attitudes and priorities of the entire cabinet too.” Wallasey MP Angela Eagle, Shadow Leader of the House of Commons, added: “It’s women in Britain today who are bearing the brunt of the Government’s failing economic policy - from cuts to their jobs, child care and tax credits; to unfair changes in their pension age. “This Government is out of touch with real people’s lives. They seem to have no idea what it’s like to worry about soaring energy bills or getting the kids to school on time. The message from women in the North West is clear – until this Tory-led Government starts listening, women won’t calm down.” Watch Angela’s YouTube video – Until this Tory-led Government starts listening, women won't 'calm down': http://www.youtube.com/user/labournorthwest?feature=mhee
