Letter: Birtwistle Beggars Belief...

It really does beggar belief that our MP, Gordon Birtwistle has voted in the House of Commons to support the Tories reorganisation of the NHS.  This is the biggest reorganisation in the history of the NHS and is in itself going to cost a staggering 3 billion pound.

Letter: Burnley sold down the river, again!

After reading our Lib Dem MPs 'Westminster Week' dated 16/09/11, I feel very strongly that I should be allowed to make comment on his actions in the Health and Social Care Bill. He has now shown his true colours on this issue; and he should hang his head in shame.

Lancashire bus cuts disrupt start to new school year

LANCASHIRE Labour has launched a campaign highlighting the short sighted bus cuts that threaten to disrupt young people’s return to school.

Tory-led Lancashire County Council has cut £829,000 from this year’s transport budget with more than 330,000 bus journeys per year axed across Lancashire. So far 16 local and school bus routes have been scrapped, in addition to fares increases on many routes.

School pupils have been left without buses in Nelson and Burnley, as the 978 and 897 Sir John Thursby services are cut; as well as the 834 in Chorley which runs to Lostock Hall High School in South Ribble.

While handing out leaflets for the Labour/Unite stall in Burnley town centre on Saturday, it was really positive to see how so many people in Burnley feel passionately about their NHS. It’s a shame our MP Gordon Birtwistle doesn't have this in common with the people he represents.

Shoots of Recovery

Burnley's University campus is yet another example of the Labour Government's investment in Burnley. I wish to see UCLAN in Burnley go from strength to strength and I am very pleased that the University is filling all its places, however I can't help but think that the sudden rush to enrol this year has a lot to do with the Tory/Lib Dem decision to triple university fees for future years.

Savage cuts in our youth services imposed

I am absolutely disgusted at the savage cuts in youth services that are to be imposed in Burnley. I am even more disgusted that our MP contents himself with a rant at County Council and refuses to stand up for the young people of our town. He knows as well as anyone that the blame for these cuts lies entirely with the Conservative/ Liberal Democrat Coalition Government; a government in which he seems very happy to serve. What did he think County Council was going to do when his Government made the decision to cut £179 million from Lancashire’s budget?

No case to re-open the Children's Ward in Burnley

The Lancashire Telegraph will report tomorrow that the review into the closure of the Children's Ward at Burnley General Hospital has now been completed.

The report to the Secretary of State indicates that the decision and closure and transfer does meet Patients Needs adequately and that there is therefore no case to re-open the Children's Ward in Burnley.
